Budapest, often celebrated for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture, is a city that leaves an indelible impression on those who visit. Yet, beneath the surface of this enchanting destination, a stark reality exists—one that travelers of color often encounter but rarely discuss. During our recent journey to Budapest, Hungary, our group of Black women travelers was faced with moments that challenged the idyllic image of the city, revealing an unsettling undercurrent of racism.

An Encounter That Shattered Illusions

As we explored Budapest, we reveled in its grandeur, enjoyed its culinary delights, and immersed ourselves in the thermal baths that have made the city famous. But our enchantment was marred by a disheartening encounter that cast a pall over our trip. It was a reminder that racism, sadly, knows no borders.

While relaxing in a picturesque park, we were met with the unsolicited admonition of a local woman. Her words cut through the serene surroundings as she told us, "This is not your country. Keep quiet." These words left us stunned and questioning the very essence of our travel experience.

Experiencing Racism in Retail

Our unsettling experience did not end there. At a local shop, we were met with a stark contrast in treatment. The shopkeeper's demeanor was openly rude, failing to greet us with a smile or even acknowledge our presence. In stark contrast, white travelers received warm greetings and friendly smiles. It was a stark reminder that the color of our skin was a deciding factor in the service we received.

Unwelcome Encounters at the Thermal Spas

Our disheartening encounters were not limited to the city's streets. At Budapest's famed thermal spas, we encountered an uncomfortable atmosphere. The Széchenyi Thermal Pools, often touted as a must-visit destination, proved to be a place saturated with racism and unwanted advances. The environment was anything but safe for female travelers, especially for a group of Black women.

In one chilling incident, we were directly told to "keep quiet" as we enjoyed the spa. The hypocrisy of the situation was evident as the steam room was filled with other visitors conversing freely without any reprimand. This unwarranted treatment left us deeply disappointed and disillusioned.

A Mixed Bag of Encounters

Despite these disheartening incidents, our trip to Budapest was not devoid of positivity. The hotel staff at the UP Hotel, for instance, offered exceptional service—attentive, warm, and eager to assist. Other fellow travelers on trams were also kind-hearted, offering assistance when needed. However, these bright spots did not overshadow the recurring incidents of racism and prejudice that we encountered.

A Regretful Verdict

As we reflect on our time in Budapest, the question arises—would we choose to return? Regrettably, the answer is a resounding "no." While we encountered kindness and warmth from some individuals, it was overshadowed by the racism and discrimination we faced.

Budapest is undoubtedly a city of captivating beauty and rich history, but it's also a city where the lens through which you're viewed can vary drastically based on the color of your skin. Our hope is that by sharing our experience, we contribute to a broader conversation about racism in travel and encourage discussions on how to make the world a more inclusive and welcoming place for all travelers.

In our future journeys, we'll continue to explore the world with open hearts, but our eyes are now wide open to the very real challenges that travelers of color often face. It is through dialogue and shared experiences that we hope to pave the way for a more accepting and diverse travel landscape.
